What We Do Know

How It Spreads

The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus. The virus is spread mainly from person-to-person so try to keep at least a 6 feet distance from people around you. There is currently no vaccine to prevent coronavirus so it is even more important that these measures are taken seriously.

Take Steps to Protect Yourself

Clean your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after you have been in a public place, or after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing. If soap and water are not readily available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Cover all surfaces of your hands and rub them together until they feel dry. It is also important that you avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.

Take Steps to Protect Others

Stay at home if you are sick, except to get medical care. Make sure to avoid close contact with people who are sick. Put distance between yourself and other people if COVID-19 is spreading in your community by covering your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze or use the inside of your elbow. If you are sick, you should wear a face mask when you are around other people.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is the best resource for more information on how to protect yourself and additional resources if you think you are sick.
